Bonding

Bonding

Your natural beauty begins with a confident smile.

Bonding

Instant Artistic Enhancements

Sometimes, a minor imperfection—like a small chip, a stubborn stain, or a slight gap between teeth—is all that stands between you and a perfect smile. Dental bonding is one of the easiest and most conservative cosmetic procedures we offer. It requires no surgery and, in most cases, no anesthesia, making it an excellent option for a quick confidence boost.

The process involves applying a tooth-colored resin directly to the tooth, which the dentist then artistically sculpts and hardens with a special light. We polish the material to match the sheen of your natural enamel. In just a single visit, we can repair chips or close gaps, delivering an immediate and dramatic transformation that looks entirely natural.

Good Candidates

When Dental Bonding Is the Right Choice

Composite bonding is suited to small cosmetic changes on otherwise healthy teeth. Typical reasons include:

  • A chipped or slightly cracked front tooth
  • Small gaps between teeth
  • Teeth that look short, uneven or slightly misshapen
  • Localized discoloration that whitening cannot lift
  • Root surfaces exposed by gum recession that feel sensitive

Bonding is less suitable when a tooth has a large fracture, heavy decay or a big existing filling, when bite forces are high (for example with heavy grinding), or when many teeth need a major change in color and shape. In those situations a crown, porcelain veneers or orthodontic treatment may last longer. Decay or gum disease is treated first.

The Procedure

How Composite Bonding Is Done

  1. Planning and shade matching: The dentist discusses the change you want and selects a resin shade with a shade guide. If you plan to whiten, it is done first, because resin does not change color with whitening.
  2. Preparing the surface: The enamel is lightly roughened and a conditioning liquid is applied so the resin can bond. Little or no tooth structure is removed, and numbing is usually only needed if decay is being repaired.
  3. Building the shape: Putty-like resin is placed in layers and sculpted by hand.
  4. Light curing: Each layer is hardened with a curing light.
  5. Shaping and polishing: The dentist trims the edges, checks your bite and polishes the surface to a natural sheen.

Each tooth typically takes 30 to 60 minutes, so a few teeth can often be done in one visit, while larger cases may be split over two.

Aftercare

Caring for Bonded Teeth

There is no recovery period, and most people return to normal activities immediately. Short-lived sensitivity can occur and usually settles within days.

  • Limit coffee, tea, red wine and smoking, especially in the first 48 hours, as composite takes up stains more easily than enamel.
  • Avoid nail-biting, chewing pens and opening packaging with your teeth.
  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between teeth daily and keep up regular professional cleanings.

Contact the clinic if you notice a sharp edge, if your bite feels high, or if a piece chips or comes away. Small repairs can usually be made by adding new resin.

Planning and Lifespan

What Shapes Your Bonding Plan and Its Lifespan

The treatment plan depends on how many teeth are involved, how much shape change is needed, whether whitening or gum treatment comes first, and how your teeth meet when you bite. These same factors influence the time needed in the chair.

Bonding is not a lifetime restoration. It commonly lasts several years before it needs polishing, touch-ups or replacement, and the range is wide because grinding, diet, smoking and the size of the bonded area all affect wear. Edges that take a lot of biting force tend to need attention sooner.

Compare Options

Bonding Versus Porcelain Veneers

  • Tooth preparation: Bonding usually needs little or no enamel removal and is reversible; veneers generally require some enamel to be removed.
  • Visits: Bonding is usually completed in one appointment; veneers are made in a laboratory and need more than one.
  • Durability and stain resistance: Porcelain resists staining better and typically lasts longer.
  • Repairs: Chipped bonding can often be repaired chairside, while a broken veneer usually needs replacing.

Many people start with bonding for minor fixes and consider veneers later if they want a bigger or longer-lasting change.

General & Preventive Dentistry

Other Treatments We Offer

Oral Examinations & Screenings

Prevention is always better than cure, and a comprehensive oral examination is the most effective tool we have to protect your smile.

Digital X-rays & Diagnostics

Many dental issues, such as bone loss, cysts, or decay between teeth, hide below the surface where the naked eye cannot see.

Tooth Extractions

Our primary goal is always to preserve your natural teeth, but there are times when an extraction is the healthiest choice-whether due to severe damage, advanced infection, or crowding.

Difficult Tooth Removal

While our primary goal is always to save teeth, there are times when removal is necessary for your health, such as with impacted wisdom teeth or severely broken roots.

Tooth Colour Fillings

Cavities weaken the structural integrity of a tooth, but treating them shouldn’t mean compromising your smile’s appearance.

Crowns & Bridges

When a tooth is severely damaged or weakened by a large filling, a simple repair isn’t enough to withstand chewing forces.

Dentures

Losing multiple teeth can have a profound impact on your ability to eat, speak clearly, and feel confident in social situations.

Fluoride & Sealants

Your tooth enamel is the hardest substance in your body, but it faces daily attacks from acids in your food and bacteria in your mouth.

Mouthguards & Nightguards

Teeth are incredibly strong, but they are not indestructible. Many people unknowingly grind or clench their teeth while sleeping (bruxism), leading to worn enamel, sensitive teeth, and chronic jaw headaches.

Teeth Cleaning

Even with diligent daily brushing and flossing, plaque can harden into tartar (calculus) in hard-to-reach areas, becoming impossible to remove at home.

Zoom Whitening

Over time, teeth naturally darken due to aging, dietary habits like coffee and wine, and lifestyle factors.

Everything You Need to Know

Frequently Asked Questions

Does bonding stain?
The resin is more porous than porcelain, so it can stain over time from coffee or wine. Regular polishing helps.
How long does it last?
Bonding typically lasts 3–7 years before needing touch-ups or replacement.
Can I bite into apples?
You should be careful. Bonding is strong but can chip if you bite directly into hard foods or ice.
Is it painful?
No. It is one of the most comfortable dental procedures available.
Does it match my teeth?
Yes. We select a shade of resin that perfectly blends with your natural enamel.
Can you close gaps with bonding?
Yes, it is an excellent solution for closing small spaces (diastemas) between front teeth.
