Advanced Protection Against Decay
Your tooth enamel is the hardest substance in your body, but it faces daily attacks from acids in your food and bacteria in your mouth. Our professional Fluoride Treatment provides a critical shield to reinforce this defense. By applying a highly concentrated fluoride varnish, we help remineralize weak spots in the enamel before they turn into full-blown cavities.
While often associated with children, this treatment is equally beneficial for adults, particularly those prone to decay, dry mouth, or tooth sensitivity. It is a quick, painless, and cost-effective preventive measure that takes just minutes to apply. This simple step strengthens your teeth at the microscopic level, reducing the need for fillings and keeping your smile resilient against daily wear and tear.
Dental Sealants and Fluoride Varnish: What Each Does
These two preventive treatments are often given together, but they work differently.
- Dental sealants are a thin plastic coating painted into the pits and grooves (fissures) on the chewing surfaces of back teeth. They act as a physical barrier that stops food and bacteria settling in grooves too narrow for toothbrush bristles.
- Fluoride varnish is a concentrated fluoride coating painted over the teeth. It sets on contact with saliva and releases fluoride for several hours, helping to harden enamel and repair very early demineralized spots before they become holes.
Sealants protect the chewing surfaces; fluoride protects all surfaces, including the sides of teeth where sealants cannot go.
Professional varnish is far more concentrated than toothpaste (the ADA lists 22,600 ppm fluoride for 2.26% sodium fluoride varnish), which is why a dental professional applies it in small, controlled amounts. The CDC reports no published evidence that professionally applied varnish causes fluorosis, the white marks that too much swallowed fluoride can leave on developing teeth.
Who Benefits, and When Sealants Are Not Suitable
Sealants work best when placed soon after the permanent molars come through, around age 6 for the first molars and age 12 for the second molars. According to the CDC, children aged 6 to 11 without sealants are almost three times more likely to have cavities in their molars than children with sealants. Adults with deep grooves and no decay can also benefit.
Fluoride varnish is recommended for children from the time their first teeth appear, and for teenagers and adults at higher risk of decay: for example people with frequent cavities, braces, dry mouth, exposed root surfaces or tooth sensitivity.
Sealants are not the right choice for a tooth that already has decay into the dentine, a large existing filling, or grooves too shallow to trap food. A decayed tooth needs a filling first; very early decay may be managed with fluoride and close monitoring instead.
How the Treatment Is Done
- The teeth are examined, and digital X-rays are used if hidden decay is suspected.
- For sealants: Each tooth is cleaned and dried, a mild conditioning gel prepares the enamel surface, then it is rinsed and dried again.
- The sealant is painted into the grooves and hardened with a curing light, or left to set, in seconds.
- The bite is checked and any high spots are smoothed.
- For fluoride varnish: The varnish is brushed onto the dried teeth and sets almost immediately.
No drilling or anaesthetic is needed, which makes these treatments a gentle first experience for many children. Several teeth can be sealed in one short visit.
Aftercare, Durability and What Affects the Plan
After sealants you can eat and drink normally. After fluoride varnish, follow the dentist’s timing for eating and brushing so the varnish stays on as long as possible. Teeth may feel slightly coated for a few hours.
The CDC reports that sealants can prevent up to 80% of cavities for two years and around 50% for up to four years. They can wear or chip, so they are checked at every examination and topped up when needed. Fluoride varnish is usually repeated at least twice a year for lasting benefit in higher-risk patients.
The treatment plan and cost depend on how many teeth are sealed, your decay risk, how often varnish is advised, and whether any teeth need a filling first. Neither treatment replaces brushing with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between teeth and limiting sugary snacks and drinks.
