Teeth Cleaning

Professional Hygiene & Polishing

Even with diligent daily brushing and flossing, plaque can harden into tartar (calculus) in hard-to-reach areas, becoming impossible to remove at home. Regular professional hygiene visits are your strongest defense against gingivitis and periodontal disease. Without this routine care, bacteria build-up can lead to gum recession, bone loss, and eventually tooth loss.

Dr. Christopher uses specialized ultrasonic tools to gently remove these stubborn deposits and extrinsic stains caused by coffee, tea, or tobacco. This detailed process not only polishes your teeth for a brighter, smoother appearance but also eliminates the bacteria responsible for bad breath. You will leave our clinic with a mouth that feels incredibly fresh and a foundation that is healthy and strong.

Who It Is For

Is a Routine Teeth Cleaning Right for You?

A professional clean, often called a scale and polish, suits most adults and older children as part of regular preventive care. It is especially worthwhile if you notice:

  • Gums that bleed when brushing or flossing
  • Red, puffy or tender gums
  • Rough, yellow or brown deposits near the gum line, often behind the lower front teeth
  • Staining from coffee, tea or tobacco
  • Bad breath that brushing does not fix

A routine clean treats gingivitis, the early and reversible stage of gum disease. It is not enough on its own when gum disease has progressed to periodontitis, where deep pockets have formed and bone around the teeth has been lost. In that case a deep clean below the gum line (scaling and root planing) and specialist periodontal care are the right option. A clean also will not change the natural shade of your teeth; that requires whitening.

Step by Step

How Professional Teeth Cleaning Works

  1. Check first: The dentist looks at your gums and teeth, and measures gum pockets where needed, to confirm a routine clean is appropriate.
  2. Scaling: Hardened tartar (calculus) is removed from above and just below the gum line, first with a vibrating ultrasonic tip and water spray, then with fine hand instruments for the final detail.
  3. Stain removal: Surface stains are lifted from the enamel.
  4. Polishing: A mildly gritty paste smooths the tooth surfaces so plaque has less to cling to.
  5. Advice: You are shown any areas your brush or floss is missing, and the right size of interdental brush if you need one.

Most cleans are done in a single visit without anaesthetic. If your teeth or gums are sensitive, a numbing gel can be used, and heavy build-up may be spread over two appointments.

Aftercare

After Your Clean: What Is Normal

It is normal for gums to feel slightly tender and bleed a little for a day or two, and for teeth to feel more sensitive to cold where tartar previously covered them. Teeth can also feel strange or more separated once deposits are gone. These effects usually settle within a few days. To help:

  • Keep brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, and spit rather than rinse afterwards
  • Clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes, even if the gums bleed at first
  • Use a sensitive toothpaste if cold drinks twinge

Call the clinic if bleeding continues beyond a week, if a tooth becomes painful rather than mildly sensitive, or if you notice swelling or pus. Facial swelling with fever, or trouble swallowing or breathing, needs urgent medical attention.

Plan and Results

What Affects Your Cleaning Plan and Results

The time, number of visits and cost of a professional clean depend on factors rather than a fixed menu:

  • The amount of tartar and staining, and how long since your last clean
  • Whether gum pockets show periodontitis, which needs deep cleaning instead
  • Smoking, diabetes and dry mouth, which speed up build-up and gum problems
  • Braces, bridges or implants that need extra care to clean around
  • Whether X-rays or an examination are needed on the same day

The fresh, smooth feeling is temporary: plaque starts to form again within hours, and it hardens into new tartar if it is not removed. How long results last depends mostly on your daily brushing and interdental cleaning. Your dentist will suggest a recall interval based on your gum health, from every few months for people with a history of gum disease to longer gaps for people at low risk.

Other Treatments We Offer

Oral Examinations & Screenings

Prevention is always better than cure, and a comprehensive oral examination is the most effective tool we have to protect your smile.

Digital X-rays & Diagnostics

Many dental issues, such as bone loss, cysts, or decay between teeth, hide below the surface where the naked eye cannot see.

Tooth Extractions

Our primary goal is always to preserve your natural teeth, but there are times when an extraction is the healthiest choice-whether due to severe damage, advanced infection, or crowding.

Difficult Tooth Removal

While our primary goal is always to save teeth, there are times when removal is necessary for your health, such as with impacted wisdom teeth or severely broken roots.

Tooth Colour Fillings

Cavities weaken the structural integrity of a tooth, but treating them shouldn’t mean compromising your smile’s appearance.

Crowns & Bridges

When a tooth is severely damaged or weakened by a large filling, a simple repair isn’t enough to withstand chewing forces.

Dentures

Losing multiple teeth can have a profound impact on your ability to eat, speak clearly, and feel confident in social situations.

Fluoride & Sealants

Your tooth enamel is the hardest substance in your body, but it faces daily attacks from acids in your food and bacteria in your mouth.

Mouthguards & Nightguards

Teeth are incredibly strong, but they are not indestructible. Many people unknowingly grind or clench their teeth while sleeping (bruxism), leading to worn enamel, sensitive teeth, and chronic jaw headaches.

Bonding

Sometimes, a minor imperfection—like a small chip, a stubborn stain, or a slight gap between teeth—is all that stands between you and a perfect smile.

Zoom Whitening

Over time, teeth naturally darken due to aging, dietary habits like coffee and wine, and lifestyle factors.

Everything You Need to Know

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I get my teeth cleaned?
Every 6 months for most patients; those with gum disease may need more frequent visits.
Does teeth cleaning hurt?
Mild sensitivity may occur if gums are inflamed, but the procedure is generally comfortable.
Will my teeth become loose after cleaning?
No. It may feel that way because tartar was holding inflamed gums apart, but cleaning improves stability.
Is polishing necessary?
Yes. Polishing smooths enamel, making it harder for plaque to stick again.
Can cleaning whiten my teeth?
It removes surface stains but does not change the natural tooth color like whitening does.
Do I need anesthesia?
Usually no. For sensitive patients, topical numbing can be used.
