Deep Cleaning & Curettage

Halting the Progression of Gum Disease

Gum disease often begins quietly, but if left untreated, bacteria can travel below the gumline where a toothbrush cannot reach, causing pockets of infection. Deep cleaning, or scaling and root planing, is the first line of defense against this progression. We carefully remove the plaque and tartar (calculus) from the root surfaces, smoothing them so bacteria cannot easily reattach and allowing the gums to heal.

This procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia to ensure your complete comfort. By eliminating these deep bacterial colonies, we stop the inflammation that destroys bone and gum tissue. It is a critical step in preventing tooth loss and improving your overall systemic health, as gum disease is closely linked to heart health and diabetes.

Who It's For

Signs You May Need Gum Disease Treatment

Many people looking for gum disease treatment in Dubai first notice bleeding when they brush, yet assume it is harmless. Deep cleaning is usually recommended when a gum examination finds periodontitis: gum pockets deeper than normal, tartar below the gumline, and early bone loss on X-rays. Warning signs the NHS lists include:

  • Gums that bleed when you brush, floss or eat
  • Red, swollen or sore gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Gums that are shrinking back, or teeth that feel loose or are moving

Bleeding gums alone often mean gingivitis, which usually responds to a routine professional cleaning and better home care, so not everyone with bleeding needs a deep clean. At the other end, very deep pockets or teeth with severe bone loss may also need flap surgery after deep cleaning, or in some cases extraction. Smokers and people with diabetes are at higher risk and benefit from earlier checks.

If gum disease comes with very swollen, painful gums, loose teeth, or facial swelling, seek an urgent appointment.

Step by Step

How Scaling and Root Planing Is Done

  1. Charting: Each tooth’s pocket depths, bleeding points and mobility are recorded, alongside digital X-rays to check bone levels.
  2. Numbing: The area being treated is numbed with local anesthetic.
  3. Scaling: Ultrasonic and hand instruments remove plaque and hardened tartar (calculus) from the roots inside the pockets.
  4. Root planing: The root surfaces are smoothed so plaque has fewer places to cling and the gum can tighten against the tooth.
  5. Extra measures where needed: Antimicrobial rinses or medicine placed in deep pockets. Where suitable, a dental laser may be used as an adjunct.
  6. Re-evaluation: After several weeks of healing, pockets are measured again to see how the gums have responded.

The American Academy of Periodontology notes that many patients need no further active treatment after scaling and root planing, but most need ongoing maintenance.

Aftercare

What to Expect After Deep Cleaning

Mild tenderness, some sensitivity to cold, and slight bleeding when brushing are common for a few days. As inflammation settles, the gums often shrink a little and spaces between teeth can look larger. Keep brushing gently twice a day and resume cleaning between teeth with interdental brushes or floss as advised. Stopping smoking improves healing. A soft-bristled brush and a fluoride or desensitizing toothpaste help with sensitivity, which usually fades over the following weeks. Bleeding should steadily reduce; if it does not, the re-evaluation visit will show which areas need more attention.

Call the clinic if pain increases rather than eases, a gum swelling or abscess appears, bleeding is heavy, or you develop fever with swelling.

Planning & Results

What Affects Your Plan and How Long Results Last

  • How many teeth and pockets are affected, and how deep they are
  • Whether treatment is done in one area, by halves, or in quarters
  • The need for antimicrobial treatment or follow-up surgery
  • Risk factors such as smoking and diabetes

Deep cleaning controls periodontitis; it does not cure it permanently. Bacteria recolonize the pockets within months, so long-term results depend on daily cleaning and periodontal maintenance visits, often every three to four months at first. Pockets that stay deep at re-evaluation may need further treatment.

Compare

Deep Cleaning vs Gum Surgery

Scaling and root planing is the non-surgical first step and works well for shallow to moderate pockets. Flap surgery opens the gum to reach tartar in deep pockets that instruments cannot reach blind. Most treatment plans start with deep cleaning and reserve surgery for sites that do not heal. Many people with moderate periodontitis never need surgery, provided they keep up home care and maintenance visits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is deep cleaning different from regular cleaning?
Yes. Regular cleaning is above the gumline. Deep cleaning goes below the gumline to remove hidden tartar.
Does it hurt?
We numb the area, so you won't feel pain. You may be sore for a day afterward.
Will my gums grow back?
Receded gums don't grow back on their own, but they will tighten and become pink and healthy again.
How long does it take?
We often treat one half of the mouth at a time, requiring two visits of about 60 minutes each.
Do I need antibiotics?
Sometimes we place localized antibiotic chips in the pockets to help killing bacteria.
Can I eat after?
Yes, but avoid hot or spicy foods until the numbness wears off.
