Tooth Extractions

Gentle Care When Removal is Necessary

Our primary goal is always to preserve your natural teeth, but there are times when an extraction is the healthiest choice-whether due to severe damage, advanced infection, or crowding. We understand that the thought of having a tooth removed can be stressful, which is why we prioritize your comfort above all else. We treat the procedure not just as a removal, but as the first step toward relieving pain and restoring health.

We utilize effective local anesthesia to ensure the area is completely numb before we begin. Our dentists use gentle techniques to remove the tooth with minimal impact on the surrounding bone and gum tissue, which speeds up healing. Afterward, we provide detailed guidance on recovery and discuss immediate options for replacing the tooth, so you are never left with a gap for long.

When It Is Needed

When a Tooth Extraction Is Recommended

A routine (simple) extraction is used for a tooth that is fully visible in the mouth and can be removed without cutting the gum. Common reasons include:

  • Decay or a fracture so extensive that a filling, crown or root canal treatment cannot restore the tooth
  • Advanced gum disease that has left a tooth very loose
  • Baby teeth that have not fallen out and are blocking adult teeth
  • Creating space as part of an orthodontic plan

An extraction is not the only answer to a painful tooth. Many infected teeth can be kept with root canal treatment, and a cracked tooth may be saved with a crown, so these are discussed first. Teeth that are impacted, broken at the gumline or have curved roots usually need a surgical approach, covered on our Difficult Tooth Removal page.

Step by Step

How a Simple Extraction Is Done

  1. Assessment and X-ray: The dentist examines the tooth and takes a digital X-ray to check the root shape and nearby structures, and reviews your medical history and medicines.
  2. Local anesthesia: The tooth and surrounding gum are numbed, and the dentist confirms the area is numb before starting.
  3. Loosening: An instrument called an elevator gently widens the space between the tooth and the bone.
  4. Removal: The tooth is lifted out with forceps. You feel pressure, which is normal.
  5. Closing the site: You bite on gauze so a blood clot forms in the socket, and you receive written aftercare instructions.

A routine extraction is usually completed in a single short visit.

Aftercare

Recovery: Protecting the Blood Clot

The blood clot in the socket is the foundation of healing, so most aftercare advice aims to protect it:

  • Do not rinse or spit forcefully for the first 24 hours, and avoid touching the area with your tongue or fingers.
  • From the next day, rinse gently with warm salt water a few times a day.
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol for at least 24 to 48 hours, and drinks that are very hot.
  • Chew on the other side and rest for the remainder of the day, avoiding heavy exercise.
  • If the socket oozes, bite firmly on a damp gauze pad for about 30 minutes.

Some soreness for a day or two is normal. Contact the clinic if bleeding will not stop with pressure, if pain gets worse after a few days, or if you notice a bad taste, fever or swelling that is increasing. Swelling that affects breathing or swallowing needs emergency care immediately.

Planning Ahead

What Affects Your Extraction Plan

The plan for an extraction depends on:

  • The position, condition and root shape of the tooth seen on X-ray
  • Whether there is active infection that needs managing first
  • Medical factors such as blood-thinning medicines, diabetes or bone medications, which you should always mention
  • Whether the tooth will be replaced, and with what

Planning the replacement early matters. When a gap is left open, neighboring teeth can drift and the bone where the tooth was gradually shrinks. A dental implant, bridge or partial denture can each be considered, and the timing depends on how the site heals.

Healing is gradual. The gum usually closes over the socket within the first couple of weeks, while the bone underneath continues to fill in for several months. If an implant is planned, the dentist will advise whether to place it once the bone has healed or whether bone grafting at the time of extraction could help preserve the site. Back teeth that are not visible are still worth replacing, because they carry much of your chewing load.

Other Treatments We Offer

Oral Examinations & Screenings

Prevention is always better than cure, and a comprehensive oral examination is the most effective tool we have to protect your smile.

Digital X-rays & Diagnostics

Many dental issues, such as bone loss, cysts, or decay between teeth, hide below the surface where the naked eye cannot see.

Difficult Tooth Removal

While our primary goal is always to save teeth, there are times when removal is necessary for your health, such as with impacted wisdom teeth or severely broken roots.

Tooth Colour Fillings

Cavities weaken the structural integrity of a tooth, but treating them shouldn’t mean compromising your smile’s appearance.

Crowns & Bridges

When a tooth is severely damaged or weakened by a large filling, a simple repair isn’t enough to withstand chewing forces.

Dentures

Losing multiple teeth can have a profound impact on your ability to eat, speak clearly, and feel confident in social situations.

Fluoride & Sealants

Your tooth enamel is the hardest substance in your body, but it faces daily attacks from acids in your food and bacteria in your mouth.

Mouthguards & Nightguards

Teeth are incredibly strong, but they are not indestructible. Many people unknowingly grind or clench their teeth while sleeping (bruxism), leading to worn enamel, sensitive teeth, and chronic jaw headaches.

Bonding

Sometimes, a minor imperfection—like a small chip, a stubborn stain, or a slight gap between teeth—is all that stands between you and a perfect smile.

Teeth Cleaning

Even with diligent daily brushing and flossing, plaque can harden into tartar (calculus) in hard-to-reach areas, becoming impossible to remove at home.

Zoom Whitening

Over time, teeth naturally darken due to aging, dietary habits like coffee and wine, and lifestyle factors.

Everything You Need to Know

Frequently Asked Questions

Does pulling a tooth hurt?
You will feel pressure, but you should not feel pain. We ensure the area is completely numb before starting.
Can I go back to work afterward?
For simple extractions, yes. For surgical removal (like wisdom teeth), you may need a day of rest.
What should I eat after?
Stick to soft, cool foods like yogurt, smoothies (no straw), and mashed potatoes for the first 24 hours.
Do I need antibiotics?
Not always. We prescribe them only if there is a significant infection or specific medical need.
What is "dry socket"?
It's a painful condition where the blood clot dislodges. We give you specific instructions (no smoking, no straws) to prevent it.
How long does the hole take to close?
The gum usually heals over in 1-2 weeks, while the bone underneath takes a few months to fully fill in.
