Oral Examinations & Screenings

The Foundation of Your Oral Health

Prevention is always better than cure, and a comprehensive oral examination is the most effective tool we have to protect your smile. Beyond checking for simple cavities, these visits allow us to monitor the health of your gums, bite alignment, and jaw joints. We also perform routine oral cancer screenings, looking for subtle tissue changes that might go unnoticed at home but are critical to catch early.

During your visit, we take the time to discuss what we see, using it as an educational opportunity rather than just a check-up. We review your medical history and daily habits to create a personalized roadmap for your health. By catching issues like gum inflammation or enamel wear in their earliest stages, we can often reverse them with simple guidance, saving you from complex treatments later.

Who It Is For

Who Needs a Dental Checkup in Dubai

A routine checkup suits almost everyone with natural teeth, dentures or implants, including people who feel completely fine. Gum disease and early decay are often silent, so the absence of pain is not a reliable sign of health.

Book sooner than your usual recall if you notice:

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
  • New sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet foods
  • A chipped tooth, a lost filling or a crown that feels loose
  • A change in how your teeth meet when you bite
  • Persistent bad breath or a bad taste

A checkup is an assessment, not a cure. If you already have toothache, swelling or a broken tooth, ask for an urgent or problem-focused appointment instead, so the dentist can treat the cause the same day where possible. Facial swelling with fever, or any difficulty swallowing or breathing, needs emergency medical care straight away.

Step by Step

What Happens During the Examination

  1. History: The dentist reviews your general health, medicines, any dental problems since your last visit, and habits such as smoking, diet and how you clean your teeth.
  2. Teeth: Each tooth and existing filling or crown is checked for decay, cracks and wear.
  3. Gums: A thin, blunt probe measures the gum pockets around the teeth to look for signs of periodontal (gum) disease.
  4. Soft tissues: The tongue, cheeks, palate, floor of the mouth and lips are examined, and the neck and jaw may be felt for lumps.
  5. Bite and jaw joints: The dentist looks at how your teeth meet and checks the jaw joints (TMJ) for clicking or tenderness.
  6. Imaging if needed: Digital X-rays are taken only when they will add information the eye cannot see.
  7. Plan: Findings are explained, any treatment is booked as a separate visit, and your next recall date is agreed.

No anaesthetic is needed for an examination.

Oral Cancer Check

Signs That Should Not Wait for Your Next Checkup

Part of every examination is a look at the soft tissues for changes that could be early signs of mouth cancer. Most of the changes found are harmless, but they are worth checking because problems found early are usually easier to treat. See a dentist or doctor promptly, rather than waiting for a routine visit, if you notice:

  • A mouth ulcer that has not healed after three weeks
  • A red or white patch inside the mouth
  • A lump in the mouth, on the lip, or in the neck
  • Mouth pain, difficulty swallowing or a hoarse voice that does not go away

Smoking, chewing tobacco and heavy drinking raise the risk, so mention these habits honestly; the information stays part of your clinical record.

Your Recall Interval

How Often You Need a Checkup

There is no single interval that suits everyone. UK NHS guidance says the gap between checkups can range from three months to two years depending on your oral health and risk, and the six-monthly visit is a common habit rather than a fixed rule. Your dentist sets your interval based on factors such as:

  • Your history of decay and how recently you needed fillings
  • Gum health, including any past periodontal treatment
  • Smoking, diabetes, dry mouth or medicines that affect saliva
  • Braces, aligners, implants, crowns or bridges that need monitoring
  • Age: children’s teeth and jaws change quickly and are usually seen more often

The cost of a visit depends mainly on what is included, for example whether X-rays or a cleaning are needed on the same day, rather than on the examination itself. Your interval can be shortened or lengthened as your risk changes.

Other Treatments We Offer

Digital X-rays & Diagnostics

Many dental issues, such as bone loss, cysts, or decay between teeth, hide below the surface where the naked eye cannot see.

Tooth Extractions

Our primary goal is always to preserve your natural teeth, but there are times when an extraction is the healthiest choice-whether due to severe damage, advanced infection, or crowding.

Difficult Tooth Removal

While our primary goal is always to save teeth, there are times when removal is necessary for your health, such as with impacted wisdom teeth or severely broken roots.

Tooth Colour Fillings

Cavities weaken the structural integrity of a tooth, but treating them shouldn’t mean compromising your smile’s appearance.

Crowns & Bridges

When a tooth is severely damaged or weakened by a large filling, a simple repair isn’t enough to withstand chewing forces.

Dentures

Losing multiple teeth can have a profound impact on your ability to eat, speak clearly, and feel confident in social situations.

Fluoride & Sealants

Your tooth enamel is the hardest substance in your body, but it faces daily attacks from acids in your food and bacteria in your mouth.

Mouthguards & Nightguards

Teeth are incredibly strong, but they are not indestructible. Many people unknowingly grind or clench their teeth while sleeping (bruxism), leading to worn enamel, sensitive teeth, and chronic jaw headaches.

Bonding

Sometimes, a minor imperfection—like a small chip, a stubborn stain, or a slight gap between teeth—is all that stands between you and a perfect smile.

Teeth Cleaning

Even with diligent daily brushing and flossing, plaque can harden into tartar (calculus) in hard-to-reach areas, becoming impossible to remove at home.

Zoom Whitening

Over time, teeth naturally darken due to aging, dietary habits like coffee and wine, and lifestyle factors.
