Your natural beauty begins with a confident smile.
Guiding Young Smiles for a Bright Future
Many parents believe they should wait until all of a child’s baby teeth have fallen out before seeing an orthodontist, but early evaluation is key to preventing severe issues later. We recommend an initial assessment around age seven, when the first permanent molars have erupted. At this stage, we can identify subtle problems with jaw growth, crowding, or bite alignment. By intervening while the jawbones are still developing, we can guide their growth, creating enough space for permanent teeth and correcting imbalances that would be much harder (and potentially require surgery) to fix in adulthood.
Our approach to children’s orthodontics is gentle and encouraging. Treatment at this age often involves simple appliances like space maintainers or palatal expanders rather than full braces. These early measures are designed to be comfortable and non-invasive. By addressing these structural issues early, we can significantly shorten-or even eliminate-the need for complex orthodontic treatment during the teenage years, setting your child up for a lifetime of confidence with a naturally healthy smile.
Signs Your Child May Need Orthodontics for Children
Bite problems usually become noticeable between about 6 and 12 years old, and many children start treatment between 8 and 14. Book an orthodontic check if you notice:
- Baby teeth lost very early or very late, or permanent teeth not appearing in their usual order
- Crowded front teeth, or adult teeth erupting behind baby teeth
- Upper front teeth that bite behind the lower ones, or a jaw that shifts sideways on closing
- Front teeth that stick out and are at risk of injury
- A thumb or finger habit continuing after the adult front teeth arrive
- Mouth breathing, or difficulty biting and chewing
Many children seen early do not need treatment straight away. Often the right step is monitoring growth and eruption, with treatment started once more adult teeth are in. Small gaps between baby teeth are normal and often help adult teeth fit.
How Treatment Works for Children and Teens
- Check-up: The orthodontist examines the teeth, jaws and bite, and may take photographs and digital X-rays to see teeth still developing under the gums.
- Plan for timing: You are told whether to treat now, monitor, or wait for the teenage years, and why.
- Appliance fitting: Depending on the problem, this may be a removable plate, a fixed expander, a functional appliance that guides jaw growth, or fixed braces.
- Adjustment visits: Short regular reviews track progress and make small adjustments.
- Retention: Retainers hold the result, and growth is checked until it is complete.
Removable appliances only work while they are in the mouth, so the orthodontist will explain how many hours a day they need to be worn. Fixed appliances avoid that problem but need careful cleaning around them.
For teenagers with all their adult teeth, fixed braces remain the most common approach, and clear aligners can suit some motivated teens who will wear them consistently.
Helping Your Child Through Treatment
Your support at home makes a real difference. Supervise brushing for younger children, check that removable appliances are worn as prescribed, and keep sugary drinks and sticky snacks to a minimum, since decay around brackets can leave lasting marks. A few days of soreness after fitting or adjustment is normal and soft food helps.
Children involved in contact sports should wear a mouthguard designed to fit over their appliance. Keep removable appliances in their case when not being worn, as they are easily lost or damaged, particularly at school.
Tell the orthodontist about any previous knock to the front teeth before treatment starts. Call the clinic if an appliance breaks or comes loose, if soreness does not settle after a few days, or if your child cannot wear an appliance comfortably.
What Affects Your Child’s Plan
- Whether the issue is skeletal (jaw size or position) or dental (tooth position)
- Your child’s stage of growth and which teeth have erupted
- Whether one phase of treatment is enough or a later second phase is likely
- The type of appliance and how well your child can manage it
- Habits such as thumb sucking that need addressing first
Treatment during growth can make some corrections easier, but it does not guarantee a perfect adult bite. Jaws keep growing into the late teens and teeth shift throughout life, so retainers and follow-up are part of the plan.
Early Treatment or Waiting: How the Decision Is Made
The choice is not about age alone. Problems that worsen with growth or risk damage, such as a crossbite that forces the jaw sideways or a narrow upper jaw, are often easier to correct while the bones are still developing. Problems that mainly involve tooth position, such as most crowding, are usually treated more efficiently once the adult teeth are in. The orthodontist explains which group your child falls into and what monitoring involves in the meantime.
